[READ-A-BIT BLOG] The Ancient Art of Feng Shui – How It Can Change Your Life
According to Wikipedia, Interior Design is the art and science of enhancing the interiors (sometimes includes the exterior) of a space or building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the end user. Feng Shui is the study of the interaction between you and your personal environment and teaches you how to apply energetic principles to your surroundings. As I learned more about Feng Shui, I became super intrigued with it and have begun incorporating Feng Shui principles in my own life and interior design practice.
This is the first of a series of articles about Feng Shui and how Feng Shui can change your life. Feng Shui can also be fun. There are many components to the principles; we will keep our context in broad terms. I hope you find the principles and practices just as intriguing as I do and continue your own exploration of creating positive effects in your life.

Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is defined as an ancient Chinese art of improving every part of your life by enhancing your environment around you according to the principles of harmony and energy flow. The Chinese have known for centuries that our physical surroundings affect our inner and outer life. Our surroundings are made up of energy and affect not only our material comfort, but also our physical and mental health. relationships, and worldly success. Our bodies are also a compilation of energy. Your personal energy flow determines how you think and act and affects how you succeed in your personal and professional life. When you apply the principles of Feng Shui in your home, backyard office environment, or other environment around you, they continue to work indefinitely and provide you with ongoing energy and results for years to come – until you move.
Feng Shui is a term composed of two Chinese words:
- Feng: wind
- Shui: water
The wind and water are natural elements of the earth and flow and move everywhere on the earth. They are also basic necessities for human survival.
- Wind (air): the breath of life.
- Water: the liquid of life.
- Chi: energy or life force.
Wind and water are important carriers of Chi.
Feng Shui is the art of designing environments that attract and harness the beneficial flow of Chi.
Everything in the universe is made up of energy and two opposite yet complementary principles:
- Yin: the passive side of nature
- Yang: the active side of nature
Each environment has an appropriate balance of yin and yang energies. A too-yang environment leads to a loss of peace and harmony. A too-yin environment (e.g. too quiet or dark) causes you to become lethargic and can limit your energy and efficiency during the day.
By following Feng Shui principles, you forge a new relationship with your “space”, improve the energy levels in your environment, and become happier in the process.
